A QUICK MENTAL CUE FOR BETTER CONTROL
Pitch location is crucial. Hitting your intended target could be the difference between giving up a game winning hit or a called strike three to win the game.
So finding an edge, especially a mental edge, to help you locate your pitchers better is invaluable.
A mental cue that really worked for me was the notion of…
AIM SMALL, MISS SMALL
I'd love to say I invented it. But I didn't.
Have you seen the movie The Patriot? Do you remember the ambush scene where he tells his boys to aim small, miss small?
If not, stop and go watch it, NOW.
What he was trying to tell his boys about shooting a rifle is also true for hitting your target as a pitcher. If you aim at a large target and miss, you will miss the entire target. However, if you aim at something small on your intended target and miss, you will more than likely still hit the larger intended target.
Instead of aiming at the catcher or even at the catcher’s mitt try aiming at the logo on the catcher’s mitt or the catcher’s belt buckle.
Pick a smaller target and let it rip.
See if this works for you.
